The Porsche 944 K-swap project, led by The Drive video producer Tom Gorelik, has finally achieved its goal of getting the car running. The project, which involved swapping a Honda K-series engine into a Porsche 944, was deemed impossible by some, but Gorelik and his team have proven them wrong.
The journey to this point has been long and arduous, with numerous twists and turns. Gorelik had attempted to diagnose issues with the engine himself, but eventually had to call in specialists from Fulltime Fabrication to help get the project back on track.
After tearing down the K24 engine, the team at Fulltime Fabrication identified several issues, including bent valves, and were able to help Gorelik get the car sorted. The process was not easy, with virtually every component, from the motor to the gearbox and hydraulics, needing attention.
Fulltime Fabrication’s Kevin Maecha praised Gorelik’s DIY attitude, saying “What he did, in the back of a shop, in the cold weather, on the ground? I respect that. You cannot pay me enough to do that on the ground.” Maecha also noted that “For a DIY guy, he got it there.”
Car Finally Runs Strong
With the car finally running, Gorelik has been able to tune it and is already seeing impressive results. The 2.5-liter engine, with just a turbo, is pushing nearly 300 horsepower at the wheels. While it may not have the instant torque of an LS swap, it still makes impressive noises.
Gorelik has admitted that the car is by no means perfect, but now that it works, he’s been slowly cleaning it up. He’s also on the lookout for a fresh body, so that he can tackle the same project again, with a nicer result. This time around, he’ll have the benefit of a garage to work in from the start.
