Chery’s Omoda Jaecoo division has introduced the Omoda X, a new crossover SUV blending thermal imaging and a rugged design, as it prepares to expand its presence in Australia. The vehicle was revealed at the Omoda X Night event in Wuhu, China, on October 20, part of Chery Group’s International User Summit. While the model was previewed ahead of the event, the brand has not yet confirmed pricing, availability, or launch timing for the Australian market.
A rugged crossover with off-road claims
The Omoda X adopts a design language called Crossvolution, merging a sporty stance with off-road readiness. It features pronounced wheel arches, lower-body cladding, and sharply creased panels, along with jagged daytime running lights and rear lamps styled like lightning bolts.
At 4,650mm long, 1,910mm wide, and 1,720mm tall, the model matches the dimensions of a Toyota RAV4, with 200mm of ground clearance and a 700mm wading depth. The vehicle will be offered with 19-inch alloy wheels and all-terrain tires, though full specifications remain undisclosed.
The model will come with either two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, along with plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or full electric (EV) powertrains. The brand claims a towing capacity of up to 1,800kg and a roof load capacity of 75kg. In a first for Omoda Jaecoo, the Omoda X features an infrared thermal imaging system, or night vision, with a claimed recognition range of up to 90 metres.
Tech and interior features
Its cabin is dubbed the Mecha Command Cockpit, featuring a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 13.2-inch central touchscreen, and physical controls for climate and drive modes.
The brand highlights 39 storage spaces inside, though practicality remains untested. The interior blends digital interfaces with tactile switches, a design choice that aligns with Omoda’s push toward rugged functionality over minimalist luxury.
For Australian customers, the next confirmed models are the Omoda 4 and Omoda 7, both set to arrive in the first half of 2027 after their debut at Everything Electric Sydney in September.
The Omoda 4 will compete with the Hyundai Kona and Jaecoo J5, while the Omoda 7 aims at the Toyota RAV4 and Jaecoo J7 segments. The Omoda 7’s flagship UK version includes a 15.6-inch sliding touchscreen, though its availability in Australia hasn’t been confirmed.
