Mercedes-AMG is preparing an all-electric version of the C-Class, with spy photographers capturing prototypes of what is expected to become the C63 AMG EV. The test vehicles show no exhaust pipes, confirming that the model will be fully electric. It is set to compete directly with the upcoming BMW i3M, and may incorporate advanced technology to distinguish itself in the performance EV market.
Design and Performance Cues
The camouflage on the prototypes is extensive, but AMG-specific bodywork is visibly more aggressive than the updated conventional C-Class, which recently launched with a facelift and an electric variant. The car sits lower on its suspension, and the front end appears wider, with a pronounced relationship between the headlights and surrounding panels.
The rear features an active spoiler and distinctive taillights bearing the three-pointed star emblem. Large brake discs are visible behind the wheels, consistent with AMG’s performance heritage. These styling elements suggest a vehicle designed to maintain the brand’s muscular character despite the shift to electric power.
Electric Powertrain Details
While no official specifications have been confirmed, industry sources indicate the new C63 EV will likely use three axial flux motors supplied by YASA, a British firm acquired by Mercedes-Benz in 2021. These motors are praised for delivering high power output in a compact form factor, and are expected to enable all-wheel drive capability across the model line.
Power output is projected to exceed 800bhp, according to reports citing AMG leadership. This aligns with previous statements that axial flux technology should serve as the electric equivalent of the traditional V8 engine. To preserve the emotional appeal associated with AMG’s combustion models, the vehicle is expected to feature artificial sound systems and simulated vibration feedback.
Additional technologies under consideration include adaptive air suspension, active roll control, and rear-wheel steering for enhanced maneuverability. These systems would complement the instant torque delivery typical of electric drivetrains, reinforcing the car’s performance positioning.
Despite mixed reception of the previous C63 plug-in hybrid variant, AMG appears committed to electrification as a strategic direction. The company has indicated that combustion engines will remain in production for the foreseeable future, suggesting a dual-path approach to performance vehicles moving forward.
The full reveal of the electric C-Class AMG is anticipated before its expected market launch in 2027.
