NASCAR Truck Series drivers are preparing for a chaotic playoff season, following a month-long break. The drivers have been watching the first two Chase races in the Cup and O’Reilly Auto Parts series, which have been marked by unexpected outcomes.
Tenth-seeded Tyler Ankrum said he learned to “expect the unexpected” from watching the other series. He noted that the outcomes of some Cup Series races were surprising, and he thinks the Truck Series will be similar.
Seventh-seeded Grant Enfinger also commented on the chaos in the other series, saying there was “more chaos than I expected.” He acknowledged that truck racing is prone to chaos, and this season’s playoffs will likely be no exception.
Unpredictable Outcomes
Denny Hamlin, who had a significant lead before the points were reset, is now clinging to a slim nine-point advantage over Kyle Larson.
In the O’Reilly Series, Justin Allgaier’s dominance during the regular season has not carried over to the playoffs. He now trails Sheldon Creed in the standings by three points.
Top-seeded Truck Series competitor Layne Riggs believes that these outcomes show that starting with a lead is not everything. He said that being passive and running top-five consistently will not win a championship, and that something will likely go wrong in one of the seven playoff races.
Truck Series Preparations
The Truck Series has a different playoff format than the other series, with only 10 drivers and seven races. The teams are also smaller, which is why the competitors believe the month-long break has benefited them.
Second-seeded Kaden Honeycutt said the break allowed his team to build the trucks they needed for the playoffs without working long hours. He noted that this has improved the team’s morale and preparation.
Riggs, who spent his break in the Bahamas, said the time off has been good for the smaller teams. He explained that they do not have the personnel to race every weekend, and the break has allowed them to prepare for the playoffs.
The Truck Series Chase kicks off Thursday at 8 p.m. at Bristol Motor Speedway, and the drivers are ready for a chaotic and unpredictable playoff season.
